Description
Natural Salicornia from the Bay of Cadiz – La Salá
Natural Salicornia is a plant that grows in the estuaries of the Bay of Cadiz. It is not considered to be an algae, but rather a plant that grows in salt marshes. It is also known by other names, such as sea asparagus or saltwort because it has an intense salty taste due to its roots absorbing seawater in salty terrain.
Natural salicornia is a halophytic plant. It thrives in areas where seawater is concentrated, especially in salt marshes.
Salicornia has a salty taste and is an edible plant that has always been consumed to some extent on the coast of Cadiz, but its use in gastronomy has become increasingly popular in recent times.
There are several different species of Salicornia, most of which are small, usually less than 30 cm tall. They are becoming more and more common in haute cuisine, so we would like to talk about this interesting product. Its versatility makes it easy to include in the Mediterranean diet.
These plants grow in seawater and can even be submerged in it. Are you brave enough to try them?
